“A true piece of writing is a dangerous thing. In can change your life.” Tobias Wolff

I believe writers can change the world.  Being inspired by our passion to find a voice and engage with readers can allow our words to prompt courage and empathy and bring about social and possibly political change… all while telling a great story!

Writing to Change the World is 17 chapters divided into 3 sections of practical instruction as well as being an inspiring guide for the writer looking to enable change.  Although this book isn’t meant to teach us how to write, as far as books on writing go, this is a gem!

In Dr. Mary Pipher’s words, “I hope Writing to Change the World helps you clarify your thoughts, experience new hope and new energy, and communicate your best ideas as effectively as possible. My goal is to help you translate your passion and idealism into action.” (Page 13 of the Introduction)

As writers we have the potential to effect change.  Writing to Change the World offers many avenues to explore including letters, speeches, essays, blogs, music and poetry to name but a few.  What ever your medium, these lessons can help you connect with your audience by not only telling a story but by being part of the story.  Dr. Pipher uses stories and case-studies while promoting the importance of having a point of view. Almost every page has an inspiring quote to launch a thousand ideas of our own.   She measures success not by “sales” but by how much we give of ourselves and our talent; a most inspiring idea given the amazing online leaders I’ve met recently whom obviously share in that philosphy.

As a Work From Home Professional writing has become my main source of marketing. Whether though email campaigns, blogging or article writing, I need to effectively convey the messages I’m most passionate about in a way that creates action on the part of the reader. As both a student and teacher of this process it was a treat to have been given Writing to Change the World over the holidays and share it with you today.
