On my way to pick up my daughter up from school, I stopped behind a car with a “Mary Kay Edition” sticker.  Well not a sticker really, it was one of those brass looking plate stickers.

Did you know GM estimates that it has built 100,000 pink Cadillac’s for Mary Kay?  It depends on the country you live as to what car is available and how you earn it, but it all started when Mary Kay ordered herself a Cadillac and had it painted to match the Mountain Laurel Blush she sold.  It became such a good advertisement that Mary Kay rewarded each of her five top producers of 1969 with a Pink Cadillac.  I think it’s “pretty” fantastic to see success in an industry that receives its fair share of negative PR.

Of course cars are just one way to reward top earners.  Multi-level Marketing Companies (MLM) or Networking Marketing Companies such as Mary Kay offer various commission models and bonus structures, not to mention a flexible lifestyle.

The business model of a MLM should not be ruled out when considering working from home.  Besides potential earnings it’s a great way to learn the ropes of owning a business.  The basics of Multi-Level Marketing, is that they merge the concepts of franchising and product distribution through you, the business owner.  The more active stores “distributors” you secure, the more distribution “leverage” you have for the product or service you sell.

You’ve probably been touched by an MLM at some point in your life, as most first time distributors “practice” on friends and family…  But what you may not know is how many businesses are available through this model.  RESEARCH is king when starting a new business and starting an MLM should be no different.   Investigating the product, the compensation plan and how much time you have to grow you business are all very important activities to consider before investing your hard earned money.

A great resource tool is www.NPROS.com.  It’s free to join and you can use it to not only research MLM businesses, but as a recruiting tool.  Over 1100 companies are listed on the NPROS site with products ranging from wine clubs to sports drinks.  You can search companies by name, or by product or state, take a look at compensation plans and find people to interview about the business.  Sign up for “news” on new companies and companies going out of business.  Yes, MLMs do go out of business so be sure to keep your own list of customers.

While we’re on the subject of MLM…  You will invest money for the start up kit, but don’t be surprised when you find yourself spending money on other products, tools, and books as you start or continue your work from home professional status.  Both professional and personal growth expenses are normal and are part of owning any business.  Over all, finding a business that fits you and works within your schedule, budget and lets not forget passion will go along way in securing your success.
